For more than 30 years, MCs have held executive positions at records labels. From the days of Eazy-E’s Ruthless imprint or Schoolly D Records, it is not uncommon for artists to control the music they makes and others’. Over the last 20 years, some of these labels have subsequently empowered other MCs to hold positions at these same labels. From Kurupt’s post as President of Death Row, to Cam’ron’s short-lived VP tenure at Roc-A-Fella, these promotions have been noteworthy and high profile. Pusha T, Jim Jones, Torae, No I.D., and Daz Dillinger are just some prominent past examples.

T.I.’s Grand Hustle Records has been around since 2003. The Atlanta, Georgia-based imprint has reached deals with Atlantic, Epic, Columbia, eOne, SMC, Empire over the course of its sprawling discography. Trae, a Houston, Texas native and part of ABN and Guerilla Maab, announced the new post in an interview with Sway In The Morning in his hometown. “I’m definitely growing as well as an entertainer-artist, just as a man [and] entrepreneur. I’m into a little bit of everything now. Other than that, I’m the big homie to the hood,” said the MC. At 3:15, Trae reveals, “For those that don’t know, you hearing it first on Sway…of course I’m 10 toes down with my music, but Tip just made me the Vice President of Grand Hustle.” Explaining his role, the former Rap-A-Lot Records artist and Screwed Up Click member elaborates, “A lot of people have been in tune with me for my ear, [as far as being] an A&R, and I think with Tip seeing a lot of the things I’ve been through and a then a lot of the artists he’s grabbing, sometimes there’ll be a ways between the labels and the artists. Sometimes the labels don’t [understand] the artists; sometimes the artists don’t understand the label. I think he feels I’m the bridge to both. Then, I think with [T.I.], I think he’s always pushing me to go the extra mile and do something I’ve never done. At first, I wasn’t thinking about doing the business side, I just loved doing music. But I took on that role, so I gotta go out here and be the best at it.”
