Redman Remakes A Slick Rick Classic For A New Adventure

Life is too short to listen to bad music. So…let Ambrosia For Heads sift through it for you and only supply you with that great stuff. Despite the reports, Hip-Hop is alive and well and, in many ways, it’s better than it’s ever been. Not only can we go back and listen to all of our favorites at the click of a button, but there is also a ton of great music still being made by artists, young and veteran alike…if you know where to look. To help with that task, we’ve created a playlist with recently released music. We update it regularly, so subscribe to follow us on Spotify if you like what you hear.

As celebrations for Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary are in high-gear, one of Rap music’s most storied labels released a special special mixtape. Tony Touch, the Brooklyn, New York veteran who commanded the streets during the 1990s, has led The Def Tape. The Def Jam Records release takes a crop of great MCs and pays homage to classics by Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, EPMD, Ludacris, and more. In some cases, O.G.’s like Chuck D and DJ Scratch step in to honor their classic catalog with new artists.

One of the highlights is Redman’s “Real N__a Time.” The song finds the Def Squad MC (who released 11 albums at Def Jam) covering Slick Rick’s “Lick The Balls.” Funk Doc makes the classic boom-bap about stacking paper and sprinkling bud into his roll. The display is confident and cool, with Redman using the chorus to ask the audience, “What you know about real Hip-Hop?” Moments later, he spits, “Everybody wanna be ghetto / Too much Kool, not enough G Rap’s in the demo,” he quips. Red’ was one of the Def Jam label-mates who greeted Slick Rick with a guest spot on his triumphant return, 1998’s The Art Of Storytelling. Notably, Slick Rick appears on the same compilation to pay tribute to a peer in the form of reworking Masta Ace Incorporated’s “Born To Roll.” It is one of the few tributes outside of the Def Jam catalog. Earlier this year, Slick Rick earned a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys.

Another inclusion on the playlist is N.O.R.E.’s “Our Turn.” The Lefrak City veteran raps about getting ostracized for his podcast pivot, only to have so many of his Rap peers try and copy him. The song covers DMX’s “Stop Being Greedy.” Noreaga and X worked together. Trouble, who tragically passed in 2022, also honors X with a version of “Slippin’” titled “Can’t Get Right.” Like the 1998 original, Trouble leads with vulnerabilities on his take 25 years later. Griselda’s Benny The Butcher (who Snoop Dogg signed to Def Jam for a forthcoming solo LP) and Conway The Machine perform LL Cool J’s “I Shot Ya” with style and substance.

The Def Tape is released in conjunction with the new documentary, Mixtape, available on Paramount+ since August 1. The film is directed by Omar Acosta, who previously directed the Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia Radio That Changed Lives documentary. The Def Tape will be made available in vinyl, CD, and cassette.
