Maseo Reveals The Plans For De La Soul’s Next Album
It has been nearly two months since David Jolicoeur passed away. The founding MC/producer of De La Soul perhaps best known as Trugoy The Dove was 54 years old when he succumbed to ongoing health battles related to his heart.
In March, as De La Soul’s back catalog was made available on streaming for the first time ever, surviving members Posdnuos and Maseo held a New York City release party, where they were joined by Queen Latifah, Common, Monie Love, Dante Ross, Monica Lynch, Dres, Black Thought, Chuck D, Dave Chappelle, Stretch Armstrong, D-Nice, Lord Finesse, Diamond D, Just Blaze, Talib Kweli, and a host of other friends, peers, and family.

On stage, De La announced that the group would go on as a duo. This week, Maseo elaborated on the group’s plans. “AOI 3 is definitely going to take precedent,” the Grammy-winning DJ/producer told the Kyle Meredith With… podcast. “It’s going to be the very next thing. That’s a responsibility that we have to our fans — a responsibility we even have to ourselves — with completing that trilogy.”
AOI, standing for Art Official Intelligence, is a series dating back to 2000’s Mosaic Thump album. That release, breaking the Top 10 for the first time in De La’s career, includes the Redman-assisted hit “Oooh.” Guests on the project included Tha Alkaholiks, Xzibit, Busta Rhymes, Busy Bee, Freddie Foxxx, and The Beastie Boys’ Mike D and Ad-Rock. In 2001, De La returned with Bionix, a second volume, which featured Devin The Dude, B-Real, and Slick Rick. Both LPs released through Tommy Boy and were part of the six albums added to streaming platforms this year.

Maseo added, “We have a responsibility to continue on just to sustain [Dave’s] legacy and what we’ve built as three childhood friends, and we have a responsibility to Hip-Hop.” Mase also set expectations surrounding Dave’s role. “A lot of stuff is fresh. There’s a couple of ideas I had been sitting on for a while. Nothing had lyrics on it.” Some songs have arrived since 2016’s and The Anonymous Nobody LP. “The stuff that had lyrics on it, we already kind of leaked it. That was ‘The Return of DST,’ the Chuck D record, ‘The People.’ The other one that we leaked was [‘Get Away,’], we used the Wu-Tang [Clan] sample.” Maseo did not provide a release date for the AOI 3 LP.

De La’s record company is also called A.O.I. Days after the De La catalog was made available, Billboard reported it registered 12.5 million on-demand strong streams in the United States in the week ending March 9 and sold 28,000 albums.
