Drake Disses Joe Budden’s Rap Career Following Album Criticism
Yesterday (October 7), Drake released his eighth album, For All The Dogs. The OVO/Republic Records LP contains songs such as “7969 Santa,” which finds the superstar speaking to an ex-lover and blaming differences on her being 25 years old. He opens the 21 Savage-assisted “Calling For You” with suggestive wordplay: “I was in the club ‘fore she even had it / She was twenty-one, I don’t see a savage.” In a month where Drake is preparing to turn 37 years old, one critic of his album revelations is Joe Budden.
On Budden’s podcast, which premiered this weekend, the Slaughterhouse co-founder condemned Drake’s choices in partners (in the studio and in life), as well as his latest body of work. “Overall, I do like the album, but I was let down; I was disappointed,” Budden says at the 1:02:00 mark. He then called it Drizzy’s best album since Scorpion, which arrived in 2018. Budden and his co-host Parks then agreed that much of Rap music in 2023 is uninspired. Moments later, Budden claims he has not heard “a dominant hook from Drake in a long time. You couple that with his [changes in rapping]. ‘Stay Schemin,’ Take Care, Views, [‘5am In Toronto’], If You’re Reading This…, So Far Gone—even [other work], this is like [Lil] Yachty rappin’.” Yachty, 21, and Teezo Touchdown are among For All The Dogs guests.

However, he called out character traits. “This is like Yachty rapping. [Drake is] rapping for the children,” the host said. “I had to look up how old this n___a was when I finished listening to the album.” The two artists had a high-profile beef in the mid-2010s, a time when Budden released Rage & The Machine, before stepping away from the studio mic, in exchange for the podcast and television microphone. That same year, Drake delivered Views. That beef included diss songs by both artists, cryptic DMs on social media, and Drake fans throwing rocks at Budden outside his New Jersey home—only to be chased by the artist and eventually confronted.
“You gonna be 37 years old; get the f__k away from some of these younger n___as, and stop f__king these 25-year-olds,” urged Joe. “Why are you still f__king the 25-year-olds? You’re a 37-year-old billionaire.” Budden also claimed that he is soon to stop reviewing albums. “I certainly don’t want to sound like I’m sitting here complaining,” Joe clarified. “If [Drake] don’t make another song, I am well-fed. Pause. He did it already.” Budden called the superstar “my man” during the segment.

Budden compared Drake to his For All The Dogs collaborator J. Cole, whose rapping he has previously criticized. “[J.] Cole used to rap about kid s__t,” claimed the podcast host. “And then he started to grow up. And then the rapping sounded like an adult rapping. I want to hear adult Drake rapping for adult people. That’s my issue with him today.”
Not long after The Joe Budden Podcast episode aired, Drake fired back at his foe—with strong words on Instagram (as captured by DJ Akademiks). “You left [rapping] behind to do what you are doing in this clip because this is what actually pays your bills,” Drake wrote. “[You] switched careers cause the things that pop into your brain had you broke living cheque to cheque and the raps you write had 450 men showing up to your shows in dusty Enyce jeans to screw up their face to Mood Muzik 29 and pretend you are the goat.” Drake was referring to Budden’s mixtape series, long celebrated by his cult fans.”

Drake then referred to Budden’s entertainment pivot as a thing of defeat. “To any artist that’s doing what they feel is right don’t let these opinions affect your mindset after the fact…this guy is the poster child of frustration and surrendering.” He then compared portfolios to the former Def Jam Records artist. “If you need it put in simpler terms, I own a 767,” he said—referring to the jet airplane. “He owns a modest house in the 973 and flies first class on special occasions.” Drake uses Budden’s North Jersey area code in his disrespectful comment.
At 43 years old, Budden responded to Drake’s comment: “You’ll grow up sooner or later….Father time is undefeated.”

Previously, Joe Budden upset Eminem with comments about his 2017 album, Revival. The two—who had worked together through Slaughterhouse’s time at Shady Records—went on to feud in the media, and Em disses on wax.
Last year, Budden and Royce 5’9 had a public war of words with former band-mates Kxng Crooked and Joell Ortiz, after the latter pair released an album and promotional campaign themed around the end of Slaughterhouse. Earlier this year, Royce spoke about the incident to Ambrosia For Heads’ What’s The Headline podcast.
