Fredo Santana has become one of Chicago, Illinois’ emerging voices. He was active in his city’s 2010s movement and also worked with Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Migos, Juelz Santana, and his cousin Chief Keef throughout his seven-plus-year career. This morning (January 20), sources including Drake have reacted to the reported death of the 27-year-old born Derrick Coleman.

Santana is credited with collaborators Keef, Lil Reese, and others in helping bring the Windy City’s Drill Music scene into the mainstream in the early 2010s. In 2013, Santana reached many audiences when he collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on the single “Jealous.” The song, covered on Ambrosia For Heads upon release, has since achieved more than 12 million Soundcloud plays and 8 million streams on Spotify. Fredo also appeared in the 2013 “Hold On, We’re Going Home” music video.

The cause of Fredo Santana’s death has not been released. According to Complex, the rapper was rushed to a Chicago hospital last October after he suffered kidney failure. One month before his hospitalization (and subsequent release) he dropped Fredo Kruger 2, featuring Keef, Reese, and NBA player/MC Iman Shumpert. The project released on Santana’s own Savage Squad imprint.
