A Suspect Has Been Arrested In Tupac’s Murder Investigation
SEPTEMBER 30 UPDATE: In the day since the arrest of Duane Davis (aka Keffe D), more details have emerged. According to legal documents obtained by Ambrosia For Heads (embedded below) and other publications, Keefe D has been formally charged murder with the use of a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang.
Davis is expected to be arraigned on October 4. Davis and his late nephew, Orlando Anderson, have been alleged to be members of the Southside Crips street organization, based in Compton, California.
On Friday, Sheriff Kevin McMahill of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department held a press conference. “For 27 years, the family of Tupac Shakur has been waiting for justice,” the official said. “It has taken countless hours — really, decades — of work by the men and women of our homicide section to get to where we are today.” He added, “While I know that there have been many people who did not believe that the murder of Tupac Shakur was important to this police department, I’m here to tell you: that was simply not the case. It was not the case back then, and it is not the case today.”
ORIGINAL STORY: This morning (September 29), a suspect has been arrested for the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur. Duane Davis, aka Keffe D, was apprehended at his Henderson, Nevada residence. This follows an investigation surrounding the fatal shooting of the Hip-Hop superstar 27 years ago this month. That attack occurred just miles from Henderson, on the Las Vegas strip.
According to The Washington Post, the exact criminal charges were not made public. Previously, Keffe D (also regularly spelled Keefe D) has admitted in interviews and his 2019 self-published memoir, Compton Street Legend, that he was in the Cadillac that fired upon Tupac Shakur on the Vegas strip. Shakur was a passenger in a BMW that was driven by his manager, friend, and Death Row Records boss Marion “Suge” Knight. Knight has stated that he was also struck by gunfire.

Davis is the uncle of Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, a Compton, California resident who was attacked by Shakur and Knight earlier that September 7, 1996 night—in the MGM Grand casino, following a Mike Tyson fight.
In his text, Keefe admitted to sharing information surrounding the 1996 shooting in 2010. This came during interviews with federal and local authorities. At the time, Davis faced life in prison on drug charges. Former LAPD Detective Greg Kading also spoke of that exchange in his book Murder Rap, which later became a documentary. “It’s so long overdue,” Kading told The Associated Press earlier this year. “People have been yearning for him to be arrested for a long time. It’s never been unsolved in our minds. It’s been unprosecuted.”

Davis said he provided information in exchange of ending the indictment. Five years ago, after a reported cancer diagnosis, Keefe admitted publicly in an interview for a BET show to being inside the Cadillac during the attack. He also confirmed that Anderson was in the Cadillac. Anderson was fatally shot in 1998 in his home town. Kading has stated that two additional Caddy passengers were Terrence “Bubble Up” Brown and DeAndre “Freaky” Smith. Both Brown and Smith have died.
