Anticon Co-Founder & MC/Producer Alias Has Passed Away At The Age Of 41
Alias, a producer, MC, and founding member of the independent Hip-Hop collective Anticon, has died. The producer born Brendon Whitney passed away March 30 from a heart attack, according to friend and collaborator, Sage Francis. Alias was 41 years old. Anticon’s social media accounts later confirmed the news.
A product of Hollis, Maine, Alias was part of Deep Puddle Dynamics, a collective compromised of Slug (of Atmosphere), Sole, and Doseone. Early in his career, he formed Live Poets with fellow Anticon co-founder Sole. The two had been friends since their teens. With the Rap co-operative, Alias relocated to East Oakland, California with much of the group in the late 1990s. He frequently toured with the group.
There’s no proper way to say this or deal with this, but so I want to put this out there and then step away for a while. Our great friend and longtime collaborator Brendon Whitney (@AliasAnticon) passed away of a heart attack yesterday. No one was nicer. No one. We love you, Bren pic.twitter.com/4TxOCPJo2z

Following 2002’s solo debut The Other Side Of The Looking Glass, Alias stepped away from rapping to focus on production, remixes, and instrumental albums. In 2007, he moved again, to Portland, Maine.
In 2014, Alias released his most recent album, Pitch Black Prism. In addition to Sage Francis, he produced for Strange Famous artist, B. Dolan. Whitney also collaborated with DJ Krush, Astronautalis, and Son Lux.
