Cole World: In A Historic Week, His Eyez Have Views Even Drake Can’t See
It has been 12 days since J. Cole released his fourth album, 4 Your Eyez Only. In that time since the Dreamville/Roc Nation released, it has topped the charts for the fourth consecutive time for the Fayetteville, North Carolina MC/producer. This feat also joined an exclusive, three-artist club in Hip-Hop.
Dating back to his 2011 Cole World – The Sideline Story debut, J. Cole’s four #1’s is only the third time a Hip-Hop artist has done this. DMX, starting with 1998’s It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot had five #1’s in a row. That streak ended in 2006, when X’s Year of the Dog…Again entered the charts at #2, just missing a six album run. Between ’98 and 2003, all five #1’s were released through Ruff Ryders/Def Jam Records. Drake has enjoyed five consecutive solo #1’s too. The OVO Sound/Cash Money/Universal Republic Records MC/singer began his run in 2010 with Thank Me Later. Including 2015’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late commercial mixtape, that streak has reached five LPs as recent as this year’s Views.
J. Cole Goes Back-To-Back To The Top Of The Charts With No Features
Not included is Drake and Future’s 2015 collaborative release, which also reached #1. The Ruff Ryders, with DMX as their flagship artist, released a #1 compilation in 1999.
The distinctions surrounding 4 Your Eyez Only do not end there. This week, all 10 songs from the album have reached the Hot 100 on the Billboard charts. In total, Cole has 12% (including non-album December singles “False Prophets (Be Like This)” and “Everybody Dies”) of the popular charts belongs to Jermaine Cole. The song on the album, “Deja Vu” is presently in the lead, at #7.
