Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine Have Made $1 Billion Together. A New Film Tells Their Story
Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine go back 25 years. Combined, they have made more than a billion dollars in ventures ranging from music to headphones and consumer electronics to film. That story of a friendship and business relationship from two producers-turned-moguls will be the subject of upcoming HBO documentary The Defiant Ones. The four-part vignette is directed by Allen Hughes, who with brother Albert, has been responsible for Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, and documentary, American Pimp. According to Billboard, the HBO film will be airing in 2017. Furthermore, it plans to include previously unseen footage of Dre working in the studio with Eazy-E, N.W.A., and J.J. Fad. Interviews were conducted with Ice Cube, Nas, and Snoop Dogg for the film.

The founder of Aftermath Entertainment and the former Chairman of Interscope Records encountered each other in the early 1990s, as Dr. Dre was exiting N.W.A. As Dre and Suge Knight’s fledgling Death Row Records needed infrastructure, they partnered with Interscope (and Priority Records distribution) to release 1992’s The Chronic. After leaving Death Row in 1996 (having made a number of successful Interscope-backed albums), he would house his Aftermath Entertainment with Iovine’s label. There, in addition to 2001, Dre would bring Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game, and Kendrick Lamar to the Interscope/Geffen/A&M Records family. In launching Beats By Dre together (as well as will.i.am, Trent Reznor, and other circle investors and creatives), Dre and Iovine helped sell the company to Apple in 2014 for $3.2 billion. Both men remain active with the brand, through Apple today. Last year, Dre released his third solo album, Compton, through the company.
Earlier this year, Dre signed on to produce music for Apple-produced series, Vital Signs. That series is said to be partially inspired by the Compton, California MC/producer/DJ’s life.
