Yasiin Bey Returns with the Somber Track 'HYMN' on TIDAL

Mos Def Hymn

Yasiin Bey has been slowly making his return to the music game by releasing several tunes on different streaming platforms. The artist formerly known as Mos Def is back with another song, this time as one-half of the collaborative duo Dec. 99th with Chicago-based producer Ferrari Sheppard.

The moody song “HYMN,” which was released via Tidal, features a soothing bass guitar groove as Bey recites a solemn sermon about life and death. In one verse, it appears the Brooklyn rhymer is addressing how people have become numb watching violent videos being spread across social media.

“How many views when the blood ooze?” he asks. “I’m confused, how many views? He then adds, “This is what death can’t kill / This is what death can’t kill: life.”

As Complex notes, “HYMN” is Dec. 99th’s first official single on TIDAL via the label AWGE which, is A$AP Rocky’s “small but secretive internal art direction team.” Bey and Rocky have collaborated together once before on “Back Home,” which appears on the Harlem rapper’s AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP album.
