Da Brat to Star in Stage Adaptation of Hood Classic ‘Set It Off’ [VIDEO]

Rapper Da Brat has announced that she will star in a stage adaptation of the 1996 hood classic, Set It Off.

The veteran rapper-actress will play Queen Latifah’s memorable character Cleopatra “Cleo” Sims. Joining her in the play will be R&B singer Latoya Luckett and actresses Kyla Pratt and Demetria McKinney. Playwright Je’Caryous Johnson is behind the stage production. His past stage credits includes Two Can Play That Game and Married But Single.

The play will kick off March 9th and 10th at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta followed by two performances at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., on March 16 and 17.

Set It Off is my FAVORITE movie of all time,” said Da Brat in a press release. “When they were casting the [original] film, I was with The William Morris Agency and got the opportunity to read for a role [of Cleo] in the movie, but I didn’t get it. I found the script in my old trunk of things that I had accumulated over the years and said to myself ‘if I ever get a chance to be a part of a sequel, I would do it in a heartbeat.’”

“Then I ran into one of the producers of the play this past fall that saw me at my sister’s birthday party and told me about the stage version they were looking to mount, but only if I would be a part of it,” she continued. “I couldn’t let it get away from me twice and had to jump at the chance. Je’Caryous Johnson presents Set It Off is a dream come true for me and I’m honored to bring it to fans across the country.”

The 1996 F. Gary Gray-directed film Set It Off starred Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise as four financially-strapped friends who become serial bank robbers.
